What are some arguments for animal testing?

Christina inquired:
I am doing a position paper and I was wondering if anyone knows any reasons why animal testing should be continued? And testing things on animals first doesn’t always tell us what it will do to humans…some examples:
-Parsley is deadly poison to parrots
-Arsenic is harmless to sheep, goats, horses, and mice
-Lemon juice is poisonous to cats
-Penicillin is deadly to guinea pigs
-Cigarette smoke does not harm mice, but causes lung cancer in humans
-Vioxx, for arthritis, caused up to 60,000 deaths between its launch in 1999 and its withdrawal in 2004 even though it was tested on animals and determined safe.
I was just wondering if anyone can offer any other counterclaims?
Thanks, this will really help me!
